However, it is necessary to remember as babies can’t speak, that’s their only form of communicating with the entire world is by crying. There are many reasons a baby could cry:

  • Hunger
  • if they’re too cold or hot
  • Wind
  • Dirty or wet nappy
  • being tired
  •  even boredom!

The list can continue to grow, but these are the main reasons. Nonetheless, there are moments when your baby cries and cries and can not seem to calm down.

Whatever you do, DO NOT SHAKE YOUR BABY. Shaking a baby violently as it can result in your baby having severe brain damage and more devastating effects.

Magical tips

1) Calm a baby down 5 seconds/stop a baby crying in 5 seconds

This sounds as if it’s too fantastic, but it works!

  • Safely pick up your baby and fold their arm across their chest, secure the arms using your weaker hand, while supporting their chin
  •  Hold the baby’s bottom using your stronger hand, use your palm for a more secure grip
  • Incline the baby 45 degrees, and rock your baby.

And voila, a quiet, peaceful baby. Once you’ve read the other just as phenomenal tips and tricks, watch the video for a better understanding.

2) The mystical ways of white noise. Stop your baby crying with white noise

When a baby wakes up from a noise, it is not the noise itself that wakes the baby up. It is actually the sudden unexpected changes in noise.

White noise is a consistent noise which can act block or filter noise. They work as they reduce the impact of the sudden unexpected noise like a cough, to create a calm environment.

White noise is of 2 kinds.

The first type of noises that are high pitched. These are perfect for getting your baby’s attention, not for them to go sleep—these act to calm your baby down.

Low pitched noise: sounds like rain patter or low pitched droning. These are ideal for your baby to fall sleep

To get your baby to sleep and calm down, you can:

  • First use the high pitched white noise to calm your baby down
  • slowly and gently reduce the pitch, to get your baby to sleep
  • Don’t use white noise all day so your baby can get naturally used to household noises.
  • if they cry in a car, this can also prevent it

These can work amazingly; however, these can be dangerous if the sound is above 50 dB, it can damage your baby’s ear. Some machines can produce sound pressure too great and causing damage to auditory development. It would be best if you did some research about the machine and the sound pressure it produces before purchasing the machine.

3) When they want to be picked up, but you have to do something else

This phrase resonates with countless people. One of the oldest tricks in the book is to pick them up and carry them. This works most of the time; the closeness to a person can give them a sense of security and safety. The warmth and being close to the heart can all calm a baby down and get them to sleep. You need a baby carrier. Do your work, hold the baby and keep them quiet is all achievable with a baby carrier. Holding your baby can also be tiresome and restricts your arm movement. Keep your hands free to do so as you wish while carrying a baby. Sometimes all they want is to be picked up and do precisely that and so much more with a baby carrier

4) A simple car drive

Baby’s can love being in a moving car. The movement of the car, the sound of the engine and the gentle vibrations, can all help a baby fall asleep. You can drive them around the block, play some music (or white noise if they cry a lot) and watch them fall asleep.

We believe that safety is of paramount importance, so we try to include any health risks with it. It must be noted that driving your newborn in a car, while they sit in a car seat can be dangerous for them. The risk is more significant when it is done for a prolonged period. The royal society for the prevention of accidents recommends that you take a 15-minute break every 2 hours you drive. I urge you to read the full article by the NHS.

5) Dr Harvey Karp 5 S’s

I wanted to put this higher up on the list; however, I deemed it fitting to put 5 S’s and number 5.

  • Swaddling- The process of wrapping your in a blanket, so they feel more safe/secure
  • Side or Stomach position- The method requires you do hold your baby on their or stomach. As we hold safety to be a priority, I urge you to acknowledge ALWAYS to PUT A BABY TO SLEEP ON THEIR BACK.
  • Shushing- This is the manner of quieting them down using white noise.
  • Swinging- This is self-explanatory, gentle rocking motion can work wonders. Conversely use a baby carrier so you can enjoy your hands being free. Or you can use a Moses basket to make it easier for them to fall asleep.
  • Sucking- You can give them a pacifier, and it should calm them down.

Colic is a condition that when a baby cries excessively with no apparent cause. It is common and should get better; however, do seek medical attention or call 111 if you are worried.

The purpose of this section was not to worry you, it was to introduce this condition, and it could be a medical problem that may need to be addressed.
